Why Forgiveness Stories Matter

Child therapists note that stories about forgiveness help children process their own conflicts and develop emotional regulation skills.

A Story About Forgiveness

The Sorry Bridge

Ruby and Anna were best friends who lived on opposite sides of a small river. Every day, they met on the wooden bridge in the middle to share stories and snacks. Then one day, they had a fight. A big one. About something so small that neither could remember what it was later. But the feelings were big, and both girls stomped home and refused to cross the bridge. Days passed. The bridge stood empty. The river flowed underneath, not caring about their argument. Ruby missed Anna's laugh. Anna missed Ruby's stories. But neither wanted to cross first. Crossing first meant admitting you were wrong, and being wrong felt terrible. On the seventh day, they both walked to the bridge at the same time. They stood on opposite ends, staring. 'I'm sorry,' they said together. Then they laughed. Then they cried a little. Then they sat in the middle of the bridge and shared the snacks they'd both brought โ€” just in case. 'I can't even remember why we fought,' said Ruby. 'Me neither,' said Anna. 'But I remember missing you.' They never stopped crossing the bridge after that. Some days they argued. Some days they disagreed. But they always met in the middle.

The Night the Stars Came Down to Play

Created for Anaya, age 6

One evening, little Meera refused to sleep. "The sky is too beautiful," she whispered. So the stars heard her โ€” and one by one, they floated down through her window like golden fireflies. The smallest star, barely bigger than a marble, landed on her pillow. "We get lonely up there too," it said. Meera giggled and tucked it under her blanket. Together, they counted backwards from a hundred. By forty-two, both were fast asleep โ€” Meera dreaming of constellations, and the tiny star dreaming of warm blankets.

Captain Rudo and the Mango Treasure Map

Created for Kabir, age 8

Rudo found the map inside his grandmother's old recipe book โ€” drawn in turmeric ink on the back of a dosa batter stain. "X marks the sweetest mango in the world," read the tiny writing. He packed his slingshot, three rotis, and his best friend's phone number (just in case). The trail led through the neighbourhood park, past the chai stall where Mr. Iyer waved, and into the lane behind the temple nobody ever walked down. There, behind a crumbling wall covered in jasmine, stood a tree so heavy with mangoes that its branches touched the ground. Rudo bit into one. It tasted like summer holidays and his grandmother's laugh.
